2. How to wash your hands

It is not rocket science, quite the opposite. It is a fairly simple process that can be done quickly and will help you prevent a huge amount of infectious diseases. In fact, if besides washing our hands correctly whenever it is necessary, we also avoid touching our face, we drastically decrease the probability of contracting diseases such as the flu.

Here are all the steps you need to follow to wash your hands. Wet your hands entirely with the clean, running water and turn off the tap. The temperature of the water is irrelevant. Apply soap.

Rub your hands together and scrub them for at least 20 seconds (that’s the recommended hand washing time, so make sure you do it right – some people say that humming 20 seconds of a song is a great way to track the time spent on this task).

Scrub the back of your hands, under your nails, and the space between your fingers. It is very important to reach the entire surface of your hands up to your wrists. Rinse your hands under clean water.

Dry your hands with a clean disposable paper towel (if possible). This is how you wash your hands properly to get rid of germs. Period. And even then, maybe some will still survive. Surgeons, for example, scrub their hands for about 5 minutes before performing surgery – and they use a strong soap and a specific brush to scrub under the nails.

However, you can rest assured because the aforementioned method will eliminate the most dangerous threats. We hope that by now, you understand that your average 5 seconds hand wash is clearly not effective.

Hand sanitizer should only be used when you don’t have access to soap and water. Depending on the situation and the place you are at, a sink may be out of reach. It is usually in those places that hand sanitizer dispensers are posted. Hand sanitizer wipes are even less effective, but they are also a valid solution since you can carry them with you everywhere in your handbag. Keep in mind that the 20-second rule also applies when using these alternative products.
